The Zurich economic area is characterised by an exceptionally high concentration of information and communications technology companies, organisations and educational institutions.

Significance

Nowadays, it is hard to imagine a branch of industry operating without information and communications technology (ICT). Strategically speaking, ICT is becoming an increasingly pivotal competitive factor. The ICT eco system includes the following sub-sectors:

  • ICT hardware
  • ICT trade and distribution
  • Telecommunications
  • IT services

Growing Sector

According to STATENT statistics on corporate structure, around 70,800 people were employed in 5,800 ICT workplaces in the canton of Zurich in 2022, compared with around 206,000 in 23,700 workplaces across Switzerland.
Gross value added amounted to around CHF 15.5 billion in the canton of Zurich and CHF 43.2 billion across Switzerland. However, ICT specialists also work in other sectors of the economy, as shown by the Swiss Labour Force Survey (SAKE), for example in the finance and insurance industry, in trade and in consulting.
