The quality programme assesses the appropriateness of care and quality of outcomes in spinal surgery. The results are discussed with the hospitals in annual quality review meetings to identify areas of concern and opportunities for improvement.

General Information

The quality programme for spinal procedures began in 2025. The quality programme of spinal procedures is being developed with Swiss Orthopaedics as well as the SIRIS foundation. In this programme as well, the focus of comparisons between hospitals focuses on process, indication and outcome quality. Hospitals are required to document and report the primary and secondary surgeons for the procedures.

Expert Group

First analyses will be developed in the fall of 2025 with the following experts:

  • PD Dr. med., M.Sc. Thorsten Jentzsch (Balgrist)
  • PD Dr. med, MSc. Emin Aghayev (SlRIS Spine)

Swiss Orthopaedics will decide on the additional members of the expert group and will include the field of neurosurgery. The AFG will inform the composition on its website in May 2026.

Updates

-      Preview 2026: In 2026, the focus will be on register matching and quality benchmarks for spinal fusions. It is being evaluation, if the AFG can support the validation of the register.

-      Update 2025: During the quality circles in 2025, it was decided that the register data from the SIRIS register would be matched 1:1 on a case basis with the routine data to create a better group of the treatment/ patient group
